MELBOURNE, Fla. — With the score knotted at three after the bottom of the eighth,
Giulia Scibilia (Carle Place, N.Y.) scored off an error and
Jaycee Filancia (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) came home off a wild pitch for the eventual game-winning run to lead the Western Connecticut State University softball team to a 5-4 victory in 10 innings against Webster University on Monday. In the first game for the Wolves,
Alyvia Hogg (Hamden, Conn.) cranked her second inside-the-park home run in consecutive days, but WestConn fell 5-4 in the eighth inning against the University of Hartford at the Space Coast Complex. WestConn improved to 2-4, while UHart moved to 5-2 and Webster dropped to 5-9 overall.
The Wolves remained scoreless in game two against Webster, until Hogg reached first off an error by the pitcher and allowed
Deanna Reimo (Holtsville, N.Y.) to score in the top of the fourth inning. The visitors continued to tack on runs as
Lorelei Stancavage (Bristol, Conn.) crossed the plate in the next inning to give WestConn the 2-0 advantage. Webster evened the score across the fifth and seventh innings, including a game-tying homer out of left field to force extra innings.
With Filancia at the plate, Stancavage took advantage of a wild pitch for ball four and put the Wolves up 3-2 in the top of the eighth. Kacey Ekstrom's sacrifice fly to right field sent Isabelle Loiben home to again knot the game. Filancia's sac bunt was mishandled by the pitcher, allowing her to take two bags, and Scibilia saw the opportunity to score on the error in the 10th inning. Filancia stole third to get into prime scoring position as another wild pitch gave the senior a chance to put the Wolves up, 5-3.
Loiben scored again for Webster, but
Lindsay Farinaccio (Red Hook, N.Y.) managed to get the final out of the game on the next at bat to secure her first win on the season.
In the opening game for the Wolves, UHart took a 2-0 lead with runs scored in the first and fourth innings, but Hogg's second inside-the-park homer this season evened the score in the fourth as Stancavage also crossed home. In the sixth, Gia Miccio hit a two-run bomb out of left field to bring the score to 4-2, in favor of the Hawks. In the next frame, Hogg singled up the middle to bring pinch runner
Angelina Avila (Hicksville, N.Y.) home and cut the deficit to one. A bases-loaded walk RBI by
Shaylee Bealey (Riverhead, N.Y.) easily brought
Victoria Wiatrak (Cromwell, Conn.) home in the sixth to force extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Katrina Baran doubled to right field and allowed Eryn Coyle to score the game-winner.
WestConn continues its Florida trip with a doubleheader on Wednesday against Carleton College at 10 a.m. and St. Norbert College at 12:15 p.m.
