MELBOURNE, Fla. — With the game knotted at two apiece,
Alyvia Hogg (Hamden, Conn.) drilled a rocket down the right field line for an inside-the-park homerun in Western Connecticut State University softball team's first victory this season as the Wolves took down Salve Regina, 4-2 on Sunday. WestConn dropped its second game of the day, 5-1, to St. Norbert College at the Space Coast Complex. The Wolves improved to 1-3, while the Seahawks opened their campaign 0-1 and the Green Knights moved to 4-4 on the season.
In the top of the second inning, Salve Regina got on the board off a sacrifice fly to left field by Ryann Burke, which allowed Victoria Geisser to score, but the home team retaliated in the following frame to take a 2-1 lead. Hogg and
Giulia Scibilia (Carle Place, N.Y.) landed on base off a hit by pitch and a walk, respectively, before
Jaycee Filancia (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) tripled to right field and brought both Wolves back to the den.
WestConn maintained the one-run lead until a groundout to the pitcher allowed Emily Cronin to even the score at two in the fourth. Hogg's two-run homer came in the sixth inning, where she paused at second to check the outfield before booking it to home plate on the heels of
Deanna Reimo (Holtsville, N.Y.).
St. Norbert came out of the dugout aggressively with a 4-0 lead in the opening two innings before
Sera DeBaggis (Mendon, Mass.) scored off an errant pitch by Alyson Clarke. Pinch runner
Francesca Foster (Mystic, Conn.) and DeBaggis found themselves in scoring position at the top of the fourth after the duo stole a base, but Foster was stranded on third after the wild pitch.
Olivia Bordenaro (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) came in relief for four frames and earned the win in game one, but was credited with the loss in game two against the Green Knights.
On Monday, WestConn faces the University of Hartford at 12:15 p.m. and Webster University at 2:30 p.m.
