PURCHASE, N.Y. - Junior shortstop
Bryan Birkl (Farmingdale, N.Y.) bashed three hits and three RBI's to lift the Western Connecticut State University baseball squad to a 10-6 victory at Purchase College in a non-league matchup on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore outfielder
Nick Lobuono (Trumbull, Conn.) drove in a trio of runs for the Wolves, while junior second baseman
Ryan Vallie (East Haven, Conn.) notched a game-high four hits.Â
The Wolves pounced on the hosts in the top of the first to snag a 3-0 advantage. Lobuono singled up the middle to push a pair of runners across the plate before he came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior third baseman
Josef Rosa (Fort Lee, N.J.).Â
The visitors widened the gap to 5-1 when senior outfielder
Peter Coniglio (New Milford, Conn.) and Birkl each drilled RBI singles to the outfield. But Purchase chipped away at the lead, slicing it to 6-5 in the seventh frame when Brian Saldana recorded a sac fly. However, the Wolves got right back to work with two runs in the eighth and another pair in the ninth en route to the win. Birkl sent two runners across the plate when he stroked a single through the left side before Vallie and Lobuono each recorded RBI's in the final frame.Â
With the victory, the Wolves improved to 3-0 overall while the Panthers dropped to 0-5. WestConn returns to the diamond when they begin their spring break trip in Myrtle Beach on Saturday. They square off against Rivier University in a doubleheader slated for 9 a.m.
