DANBURY, Conn. - Junior
Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) totaled six goals and three assists to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 20-7 victory over the visiting Westfield State University Owls in women's lacrosse action this evening at Westside Stadium. WestConn improves to 3-2 with its second victory in a row, while the Owls drop to 1-2. The Wolves will visit St. Thomas University next in Miami, Fla. on Thursday, March 18 at noon.
WestConn's Victoria Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) and Westfield State's Marena Morales scored in the first 1:37 of the game and the score remained 1-1 until Pota ignited a 7-0 run with her first goal on a free-position shot with 7:05 left in the first quarter. Wolves senior
Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) scored twice and Pota scored once more to give WestConn a 5-1 lead at the first break. Pota had a hand in five of the Wolves six goals in the second frame, scoring three times and feeding both Gracy and Ratchford for goals. Westfield State scored three times in the second quarter, and the Wolves led, 11-4. at halftime.
Ratchford and Gracy scored the first two goals of the third quarter and Ratchford assisted Gracy on a third to increase the WestConn lead to 14-4 with 9:12 on the clock. After an Owl goal by Christina Roncarati, Ratchford and Gracy scored twice more and WestConn led, 16-5, at the final stoppage. Four different Wolves, including both Ratchford and Pota, scored goals in the fourth quarter, while Roncarati netted her third of the game for the Owls.
WestConn outshot Westfield State, 44-21, scooped 16 ground balls to seven for the Owls, and won 17 of 26 draws. Ratchford finished with seven points on six goals and one assist, while Gracy scored five goals, and senior attackman
