DANBURY, Conn. -Â After collecting nine saves on the day, senior goalkeeper
Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) became the all-time saves leader for the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team on Saturday. The Wolves knotted the game 3-3 with Little East Conference (LEC) opponent the University of Southern Maine at the Westtside Athletic Complex. The Wolves now sit 4-2-7 overall and 2-1-3 in the league, while the Huskies moved to 6-5-2 and 2-2-1. Regan now has 339 career saves for the Wolves.
Delaney Israel (Medford, N.Y.) ignited the scoring for either team with a penalty kick goal in the 29th minute after
Shannon Anderson (New Milford, Conn.) drew the foul in the box. Israel has converted 3-for-3 on PKs this campaign.
USM tied the game at one a piece in the 31st minute off a goal by Natalie Flageolle before taking a 2-1 lead in the second half as Marie Benoit scored in the 53 minute. The visitors' lead was short lived asÂ
Madelyn Dwyer (Poughquag, N.Y.) evened the score 20 seconds later off the sweeping pass from
Morgan Marcuss (Meriden, Conn.). Anderson had a chance to put the Wolves up before halftime, but her goal was reversed due to an offsides call in the 33rd minute.
Anderson connected for her fifth goal of the season with an unassisted tally in the 63:19 for a one-goal Wolves' advantage, but the Huskies again tied the match at 3-3 four minutes later off the Sierra Jepson's header off the corner kick by Mia Wetzel.
WestConn pressed hard on the defensive side to keep it a close game in the first half. In the 10th minute,
Noelle Haase (Beacon, N.Y) blocked a cross by Charley Baillie that would have allowed the Huskies to draw first blood. A sliding tackle by
Tessa Kovarczi (Shelton, Conn.) in the 23rd minute denied the Huskies yet another chance to get on the board first. With eight and a half minutes remaining in the opening half,
Kathryn Ralicki (Hewitt, N.J.) went to her knees for a tackle to halt the offensive push by Emily Philipp as the two battled it out in a one-on-one situation in the scoring zone.
Mackenzie Vano finished the game with six saves despite the hosts outshooting USM 17-15. There were only five total corners attempted with only two for WestConn.
WestConn hits the road for an LEC contest against Rhode Island College on October 17 at 1 p.m.
