DANBURY, Conn. - Western Connecticut State University Assistant Director of Sports Communications
Shaina Blakesley was selected for and participated in the NCAA Division III Athletic Communicators Emerging Elite Program, a professional development initiative hosted annually in December at the NCAA National Office in Indianapolis This year's 30 participants traveled to Indianapolis on December 7 and engaged in a three-day series of interactive leadership sessions, team-management and collaboration exercises, and discussions on the evolving landscape of athletics communication.
"Being part of the Emerging Elite program was an incredibly affirming experience," said Blakesley. "Being surrounded by professionals in Division III athletic communications meant being with people who truly understand the daily grind—something even others in college athletics don't always grasp. From tight deadlines to game-day chaos, it was refreshing to be in a space where no explanation was needed—just shared understanding, support and motivation.."
Created in partnership with D3SIDA and College Sports Communicators, the program is designed to elevate the next generation of athletic communication leaders in Division III. Participants engage in interactive sessions focused on leadership development, managing and growing a team, cross-department collaboration, and navigating the evolving landscape of college athletics communications. Thirty participants are selected each year and receive full funding to attend the program.
"We are proud to have
Shaina Blakesley represent WestConn at the Emerging Elite program," said Associate Athletic Director
David Kingsley. "She has elevated our athletic communications efforts in every way in just her first few months at WestConn, and is the perfect candidate to take full advantage of this fantastic professional development opportunity."
Blakesley joined WestConn as its assistant director of sports communications in the summer of 2025, after serving in similar roles at Albertus Magnus College and Trinity College over the previous three years. A graduate of Central Connecticut State University with a bachelor's degree in communications, Blakesley was also a graduate assistant for athletic communication and marketing at Sacred Heart University while earning her master's degree in athletic communication and promotion.
"Learning from experts in the field through the Emerging Elite program was invaluable," added Blakesley. "The ability to bounce ideas off colleagues who live the same challenges sparked meaningful conversations, fresh perspectives and practical takeaways I'll carry forward. The best part of the Emerging Elite experience was the people. Connecting with Division III professionals who understand the nuances of our roles made the learning deeper, the conversations richer and the experience genuinely impactful."
