Marcel Henry (Yonkers, N.Y.) had 14 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks, leading the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to an 88-61 win over the City College of New York Beavers in men's basketball action this afternoon at Feldman Arena. WestConn improves to 8-4 with its fifth consecutive victory and the Beavers drop to 1-10 with ther fifth loss in a row. The Wolves will visit the University of Massachusetts-Boston Beacons next on Tuesday, January 6 at 3:30 p.m.
WestConn jumped out to a 9-2 lead after fastbreak layup by sophomore guard Armann Sandhu (Victoria, British Columbia) five minutes into the game. Justin Morety made a jumper for CCNY at the 8:30 mark of the first half to cut WestConn's advantage to 24-21, but the Wolves scored the next eight points including four by Henry to go back up by double digits with 3:29 left before the break. Nicholas Moore (drilled a three-pointer from the left wing as time expired in the first half to give the home team a 43-29 lead.
WestConn came out strong in the second half too, increasing its lead to 53-32 on a pair of free throws by senior guard
Tayejon Lynch (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) four minutes after intermission. CCNY picked away at the Wolves' lead and Chris Popotte scored inside for the Beavers to make the score, 57-51, with 9:29 on the clock. The Wolves answered with an 8-0 run moments later and maintained a double digit advantage the rest of the way. The Wolves reserves added another 8-0 run over the final 1:34 of the game to push the final tally to 88-61.
Five Wolves finished in double figures in scoring, as senior forward
Nick Boyce (Jamaica, N.Y.) added 13 points and Lynch, Moore and freshman
Avery Taitt-Christina (Queens, N.Y.) had 10 points apiece. Lynch also had four assists and Taitt-Christina made three steals. Morety led all scorers with 18 points and added five rebounds, five assists, and six steals but also nine turnovers. Olabanko scored 14 points and Popotte notched 12 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two blocks for the Beavers. WestConn shot 54.2 percent from the floor and forced 26 turnovers.
