DANBURY, Conn. - Senior forward
Sara Macary (Naugatuck, Conn.) poured in a double-double with game-highs of 22 points and 14 rebounds to lift the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 59-51 victory over Vermont State University Castleton in a Little East Conference matchup on a snowy Saturday afternoon. The Wolves trailed early but gradually chipped away at the deficit to come away with the win.
WestConn utilized its depth as their reserves outscored the Castleton bench, 18-3. The Wolves also dominated the interior with 36 points-in-the-paint while holding the visitors to just 11.
Seniors Maggie McKearin (Proctor, Vt.) and Emily Adams (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) led the Spartans with 17 and 15 points, respectively.
Castleton jumped ahead and took a 24-12 lead into the second quarter when rookie guard Isabelle Cole (Fair Haven, Vt.) sank a pair of free throws. They would lead by as many as 14 early in the second before the Wolves started to battle back. They reeled off 14-3 run, trimming the deficit to 29-25 when Macary powered in for a layup shortly before halftime.
The Wolves seized the lead midway through the third when Macary buried a midrange jumper to make it 35-34. Shortly thereafter, she drilled yet another, extending the gap to 45-41 heading into the final stanza. It was all Wolves in the fourth as they were able to keep the Spartans from establishing any comeback attempt.
With the victory, WestConn improved to 6-10 overall and 2-6 in conference play, while Castleton dropped to 5-10 and 1-6. The Wolves return to action when they host SUNY Cobleskill in a non-league contest on Wednesday. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m.
