DUDLEY, Mass. — Nickolas Santana (New Haven, Conn.) played a part in all four goals for the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team as the Wolves drew with Nichols College, 4-4, on the road on Saturday. The sophomore registered six points off two goals and a pair of assists, including a goal 39 seconds into regulation.
Santana quickly put WestConn up, 1-0, at the 39-second mark of the feed from first-year Matthews Rocha (Danbury, Conn.). Three minutes later, Wolves connected for another tally to take a two-goal lead in the fourth minute. Santana attempted a shot on goal that hit the top of the woodwork, but first-year Juan Gomez Herrara (Brentwood, N.Y.) was there for the tip-in.
The Bisons drew a corner kick as Nichols converted for an unassisted goal by William Pugliese-Savage to cut the deficit to within one at the fourteenth-minute mark. Maximus Vigo (Canton, Mich.) extended the Wolves' lead as the senior netted a goal at 59:54 with help from Santana and Ian Mounts (Middletown, Conn.). Less than three minutes later, Pugliese-Savage connected for a penalty kick off a Wolves foul to narrow the gap, 3-2.
In the 78th minute, Nichols notched the equalizer off the boot of Avery Morse for a 3-3 game at 77:56, but Santana's second goal of the contest helped WestConn regain the lead as Gomez Herrara picked up his second helper on the day at 80:08. Morse delivered another game-tying tally this time off the assist from Braydon Richardson at the 87th minute mark.
Neither team had a shot on goal in the final three minutes of regulation to keep the game knotted at four apiece.
Makai Smith (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Justin Rivest (Repetigny, Quebec) split time in the net for the Wolves, as Smith collected all three saves for the visitors. Nichols goalkeeper Anthony Grguric made 10 saves through full time.
WestConn returns to the Westside Stadium for a non-conference game against St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
