GORHAM, Maine — At number three doubles,
Kate Robinson (Brookfield, Conn.) and
Jessica Nyitrai (Trumbull, Conn.) won 6-3 in their first partners' win, but the Western Connecticut State University women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 match at the University of Southern Maine on Saturday. The Wolves fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the Little East Conference (LEC), while the Huskies moved to 2-4 and 1-1.
In singles, needing four of the six courts, Southern Maine took a 3-0 lead as they won at No. 1 and 2 Singles, respectively. Shortly after, the hosts clinched the win by securing the No. 3 court.
At No. 4,
Eilynn Pierre's (Queens Village, N.Y.) match went to a third-set tiebreaker. Down a trio of match points in the tiebreaker, the first-year battled back for a match point of her own. Her ball sailed just long to tie the breaker at 10, but Southern Maine went on to win the next two points. Â
At No. 5 Singles,
Aylina Razeq (Danbury, Conn.) fought back from a 2-5 deficit in the second set, but the senior could not hold on and lost 7-5, 7-5. Robinson fought off a slow start at No. 6 Singles and forced a tiebreaker in the second set, but ultimately fell short 6-4, 7-6.
The Wolves host in-state rival the University of Hartford on September 24 at 3:30 p.m. on the Westside Tennis Courts.
"Today's match was everything we were preparing for. We knew it was going to be close, and we also knew that the bottom half of the lineup would need to carry us to victory,"Â WestConn's women's tennis head coach Shawn Stillman said. "It was exactly how it played out, with singles four through six all very close matches. It's too bad we couldn't pull any of them through for a victory, but hopefully today's experience will make them stronger for the next match."
