DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University softball team swept both games of a doubleheader against visiting Purchase College on Wednesday afternoon. The Wolves pounced on the Panthers in the opener, 13-6. It marked the 500th career victory for WestConn head coach
Heather Stone who recently entered her 19th season at the helm of the program. The Wolves didn't stop after Game One as they rolled to a 22-3 victory in the nightcap.
The hosts jumped out to an early 1-0 lead before the visitors seized a 2-1 advantage in the top of the third. However, the Wolves opened the floodgates in the bottom half of the frame as they sent nine runs across the plate. Senior infielder
Rachael Ushka (Southbury, Conn.) smashed a triple with the bases loaded to regain the lead for WestConn. Moments later, sophomore
Mackenzie Moccia (Yonkers, N.Y.) drilled a three-run homer over the fence to wrap up the barrage and give the hosts a 10-2 lead. They would cruise the rest of the way.
In Game Two, the Panthers opened the top of the first with an RBI double to snag an early 1-0 lead. WestConn retaliated with a nine-run surge in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore infielder
Benni Tucci (Norwalk Conn.) sparked the flurry, driving in a run with a triple. The hosts continued to send runners home before a Purchase error allowed another pair to score, giving WestConn a 9-1 lead heading into the second. The Wolves tacked on another seven runs in the second. Moccia drove in a pair with a single to get it started before Ushka reached first on an infielder error, allowing yet another runner to cross, extending the gap to 16-1. Purchase would not recover from the storm.
With the pair of wins, the Wolves improved to 10-8 overall while the Panthers fell to 6-4. WestConn will look to keep things moving in a positive direction when they travel to NESCAC opponent Wesleyan University for a twin bill on Thursday slated to begin at 3 p.m.
