DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore
Kendall Allen (Naugatuck, Conn.) drove in five runs to lead the Western Connecticut State University softball team to a doubleheader sweep over visiting non-conference foe Mt. Saint Mary College on Thursday afternoon. The Wolves pounced on the Knights in the opener, 13-5, before blanking them in the nightcap, 8-0.
Allen drew first blood for the hosts in the opening inning of action when she knocked in a runner with a single. The Wolves would hold a 3-0 edge. They added runs in the second and third frames to widen the gap to 5-0 before racking up another trio of scores in the fourth. Allen touched the plate to make it 8-0 courtesy of a sacrifice fly from senior
Brianna Malvino (Glen Cove, N.Y.). The Knights rallied with a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth but WestConn answered with five more runs en route to locking up the win. Graduate student
Gretchen Bunovsky (Monroe, Conn.) rounded out the scoring when she belted a double to make it 13-5.
The Wolves didn't let up in Game Two. Leading 1-0 heading into the second, WestConn put another four runs on the board. Senior
Rachael Ushka (Southbury, Conn.) sparked the flurry with an RBI single before another run came around to score on an error from the Knights pitcher. Allen cemented the victory with a two-run double in the fourth.
With the pair of wins, WestConn improved to 13-9 overall while Mt. Saint Mary fell to 2-14. The Wolves return to action tomorrow for a twin bill at Little East Conference nemesis Keene State.
