Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) scored her third goal of the game with 34 seconds left in overtime to lead the Western Connecticut State University to a 12-11 victory over the Clarkson University Green Knights in women's lacrosse action this morning at Northeast Regional Park. WestConn improves to 7-1, scoring 24 goals and winning both during its spring break trip to Central Florida after also downing Baldwin Wallace, 12-10, on Saturday. Clarkson falls to 4-3. The Wolves will open Little East Conference (LEC) play on Saturday at noon with a road game at Southern Maine.
Ratchford scored the game's first goal 6:10 into play with an assist provided by senior attacker
Savannah Kom (Danbury, Conn.). The Green Knights rattled off the next five goals and led, 6-1, early in the second quarter before WestConn answered with a 3-0 run including two goals assisted by Ratchford. After a Clarkson goal by Madelynn Barnum, WestConn scored the final two tallies prior to halftime, as Kom scored with 1:22 on the clock and fed sophomore midfielder
Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) for a goal with just three seconds left that knotted the game at 6-6. Pota assisted freshman
Kyla Murnane (Bethpage, N.Y.) for the first WestConn goal of the third quarter, and sophomore
Morgan Brace (Brewster, N.Y.) scored the second while the Wolves were short-handed. Clarkson led, 9-8, after three quarters but Ratchford and Kom sandwiched two goals around one for Clarkson to tie the score at 10-10 with 8:37 left in regulation. Morgan Kenna gave Clarkson an 11-10 lead with 5:34 on the clock but junior midfielder
Faye Junge (Centerport, N.Y.) responded with an unassisted goal to tie it back up at 11-all with 4:04 on the clock.
Clarkson got off two more shots late in the fourth quarter that were both stopped by Wolves graduate
Molly Bresnahan (Groton, Conn.), the 299th and 300th saves of her collegiate career. WestConn got a player-advantage in the final minute but Brace's shot with 15 seconds left was saved by Clarkson goalie Jennaca McGill. Barnum won the overtime draw, but WestConn sophomore Annaliese Reggio (White Plains, N.Y.) forced a turnover before the Green Knights could attempt a shot. Ratchford ended the game with an assist from Kom to finish with five points for the day and 100 points in her collegiate career (64g, 32a).
