GORHAM, Maine - Seniors
Sara Macary (Naugatuck, Conn.) and
Leana Heitmann (East Syracuse, N.Y.) each tallied 15 points but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell at the University of Southern Maine, 79-55, in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Hill Gym.
The Wolves could not contain Jaycie Christopher, who led the Huskies with a game-high 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds. She finished shooting a scorching 10-of-13 from the floor which included 5-5 from three-point range. Shipley Dakota chipped in with a game-high 15 boards.
The hosts jumped ahead early as they snatched a 22-18 advantage when Lucy Wiles knocked home a layup to end the first quarter. They stretched the gap to 42-24 when she connected on a midrange jumper shortly before halftime.
Things would not get any easier in the second stanza as the Huskies cruised the rest of the way. With the loss, WestConn dropped to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in league play while Southern Maine improved to 6-1 and 2-0. The Wolves return to action for yet another LEC tilt when they host Plymouth State on Saturday afternoon.
