DANBURY, Conn. - Junior guard
Jaysean Morgan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 23 points while shooting a scorching 8-of-9 from the floor to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team to a 92-77 victory over visiting Little East Conference opponent Plymouth State University on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena. Sophomore forward
Marcel Henry (Yonkers, N.Y.) was equally impressive as he poured in 21 while knocking down 8-of-10. After racking up a triple-double earlier in the week, junior guard
Tayejon Lynch (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) joined them in double figures with 12 while dishing out a game-high seven assists.
As a team, the Wolves finished shooting a red-hot 56 percent (28-of-50) from the field which included 70 percent (7-of-10) from three-point territory. The Panthers managed to net just 35 percent (23-of-66) of their attempts. Senior guard Torran Bosworth (Springfield, Mass.) drilled a game-high 28 points in the losing effort.Â
WestConn dominated the interior as they won the battle on the boards, 45-28, while also seizing the points in the paint column, 38-10.Â
The hosts jumped out to an early 17-8 lead when sophomore guard
Nicholas Moore (Buffalo, N.Y.) drained a trifecta. He finished with nine points on 3-of-3 from beyond-the-arc, adding to the lights-out shooting. The Panthers countered with a run and trimmed the deficit to 21-19 when rookie guard Asante Aurora scurried in for a layup. But that was as close as they would get to regaining a lead. WestConn answered to pull ahead 47-33 at halftime.
It was all Wolves in the second half as they stretched the advantage to as many 24. Plymouth State did cut it to nine midway through the stanza but WestConn quickly rebuilt the double digit cushion en route to victory. It marked the seventh straight win for the hosts versus the visitors.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in league play, while the Panthers sank to 4-6 and 0-2. The Wolves cruise into the holiday break before they return to matchup against visiting non-conference foe Emmanuel College on December 29.
