DANBURY, Conn. - Four different players netted double figures in scoring as the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team outlasted the visiting College of Wooster, 74-68, in its season opener on Sunday afternoon at Feldman Arena. The Wolves forced 30 turnovers while coughing the ball up just 12 times en route to the win.
Senior forward
Nick Boyce (Jamaica, N.Y) led the way with 15 points for the hosts. Sophomore forward
Marcel Henry (Yonkers, N.Y) added 13 to go along with a team-high nine rebounds. Junior guard
Jaysean Morgan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) notched 11 points and classmate
Tayejon Lynch (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 and a game-high six steals.
Jaiden Cox-Holloway paced the visitors with a double-double on game-highs 23 points and 10 boards. He also dished out a game-high four assists. Isaac Roeder added 15 points while snagging six off the glass.
The Fighting Scots jumped out to an early 16-10 lead before the Wolves answered with a 10-3 run to capture a one-point advantage when Henry sank a pair of free throws. The lead changed hands several times before Wooster would eventually head into the locker room at halftime ahead 40-36.
The contest remained close through much of the second stanza until WestConn built up a 10-point cushion with 3:29 remaining when Lynch stole the ball and created a nifty give-and-go sequence with Boyce before connecting on a layup to make it 68-58. But Wooster would not go down easily as they cut it to just a three-point lead when Si Kielian buried a trifecta with 23 seconds to go. But the Wolves connected on a trio of shots from the charity stripe down the stretch to hold off the Scots.
With the win, WestConn moved to 1-0 overall while Wooster dropped to 0-2. The Wolves return to the court when they square off against visiting non-conference foe Manhattanville College on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
