CASTLETON, Vt. - Junior midfielder Alyssa Montavo (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored a goal, but the visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves suffered a 6-1 loss to the Vermont State University Castleton Spartans in the opening round of the Little East Conference (LEC) Field Hockey Championship Tournament this afternoon at Dave Wolk Stadium. WestConn finishes the 2025 campaign with a 7-11 record, while the Spartans improve to 8-10 and advance to the LEC Semifinals on Thursday. Junior

WestConn earned two early penalty corners but could not put a shot on goal, and Kilmer made two saves moments later before Castleton scored the first goal of the game when Jess Smithson converted on an assist by Brooke Noble with 6:38 left in the first quarter. Ava Laross scored for the Spartans with 2:03 left in the opening frame and Laross fed Genevieve Pitts to make the score, 3-0, 4:56 into the second quarter. Montalvo netted her eighth goal of the year with 1:34 left before halftime. Noble scored the first goal of the second half and Laross added two more insurance tallies after intermission.
