BRONX, N.Y - Senior forward
Sara Macary (Naugatuck, Conn.) racked up a double-double with a game-high 14 points to go along with 11 rebounds to propel the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball squad to a 50-37 victory at the University of Mt. Saint Vincent in a non-conference affair on Saturday afternoon at Peter Jay Sharp Center.
Sophomore guard
Deona Garcia (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) joined Macary in double figures with 12 points, while senior forward
Leana Heitmann (East Syracuse, N.Y.) chipped in with nine points. Classmate guard
Malaysia Dingle (Brockton, Mass.) handed out a game-high five assists.
Gretta Baker paced the hosts with 10 points while Michaela Ligon pulled down a game-high 12 boards.
Neither squad shot the rock particularly well. However, the Wolves picked up the intensity on defense, forcing 29 turnovers which translated to 26 points.Â
WestConn started the contest with a 12-0 barrage. Garcia sparked the run with a trifecta before Dingle stole the ball and found sophomore forward
Fatmata Barrie (Staten Island, N.Y.) for a layup to round out the flurry. The hosts battled back to slice the gap to 15-13 heading into the second quarter when Baker connected on a three-pointer.
The Wolves reeled off yet another run to end the second. This time a 10-2 spurt put them ahead at the break, 33-23. Macary put the finishing touches on the effort with a bucket from inside the paint. The visitors would cruise the rest of the way.
With the win, the WestConn upped its record to 2-1 overall while Mt. Saint Vincent dropped to 1-1. The Wolves return to the hardwood when they travel to non-league foe William Paterson University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
