DANBURY, Conn. - Senior
Aylina Razeq (Danbury, Conn.) won in singles and doubles, clinching the match with a straight-set victory at fifth singles, to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 4-3 win over the visiting Vermont State University Castleton Spartans in Little East Conference (LEC) women's tennis action this afternoon on Westside Courts. WestConn wins its third match in a row to improve to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the league. Castleton drops to 2-5 overall and 0-4 in the conference. The Wolves will visit SUNY Purchase next on Tuesday at 3:39 p.m.
All of the doubles courts were nailbiters. WestConn secured the point in doubles with wins by sophomore
Kate Robinson (Brookfield, Conn.) and
Eilynn Pierre (Qieens Village, N.Y.), 7-5, at the No. 3 spot and by Razeq and classmate
Jessica Nyitrai (Trumbull, Conn.), 7-6, at the No. 2 position. Castleton's Madelyn Nonni and Ginny Trevisan won, 7-5, at the top of the doubles ladder. Nyitrai gave the Wolves a 2-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win at fourth singles, followed by a 6-3, 6-0 triumph by Wolves junior
Erickah Tertulien (Norwalk, Conn.) at first singles. Trevisan swept WestConn sophomore
Ava Ciampi (Wolcott, Conn.) at second singles to make the score, 3-2, but Razeq won over Castleton's Devon Kibbey, 6-4, 6-2 to give the Wolves thei fourth point.
"We knew that today's match was going to be close, and it sure was," said WestConn Head Coach Shawn Stillman. "Any of the doubles courts could have gone either way. While the season started out tough, wea re now finding our groove and that's exciting. The hard work is paying off."
