DANBURY, Conn. — Despite Regan Scohen (Newtown, Conn. ) netting the equalizer in the second period for the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team, the Wolves dropped a tight, 3-2, Little East Conference (LEC) contest on the road at Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday. WestConn moved to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in the league, while the Warriors improved to 9-7 and 4-0.
The hosts got on the board with 15 seconds remaining in the first period as Mackenzie Ray tapped in the ball off a rebound shot. Two seconds prior, Audrey Molin attempted a shot on goal as
Jaden Kilmer (East Islip, N.Y.) made the stop but before the Wolves' goalkeeper could gain possession, Ray capitalized for the Warriors' first tally of the night.
However, Regan Schoen connected with the twine for the game-tying goal less than a minute into the second quarter.
Cassidy Nordmann (Bethel, Conn.) disrupted the Warriors' offense with an interception near midfield before passing the ball to
Jaelyn Moulton (Stafford Springs) near the top of the circle, as the sophomore delivered a deep shot on goal that was saved by Eastern's goalkeeper Hannah Jalowiec. Regan Schoen battled Jalowiec and Warriors' defenders to keep possession of the ball, followed by a tip-in through the goalkeeper's legs to knot the game 1-1 at 15:57.
Back-to-back goals within two minutes in the third period by the home team gave Eastern Connecticut the one-goal edge before Moulton closed the gap with a goal in the fourth at 50:17.
Ellenoire Schoen (Newtown, Conn.) sent the ball hurling towards the net from the top left of the scoring circle as Moulton deflected the shot to sneak it past the goalkeeper.
Eastern outshot WestConn 13-11, but both teams delivered six shots on target. The hosts also had a 9-5 penalty corner advantage over the visitors. Kilmer made a trio of saves in the net for the Wolves, while Jalowiec denied four in the cage.
WestConn remains on the road for another LEC matchup against the University of Southern Maine on October 25 at noon.
