WestConn Volleyball Outlasts UMass Boston

DANBURY, Conn. - Junior OH Julia Stoliker (Red Hook, N.Y.) had 21 kills and 21 digs to lead the Western Connecticut State Unviersity Wolves to a 3-2 victory over the visiting University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons in Little East Conference (LEC) volleyball action this afternoon at Feldman Arena.  WestConn came back from a 2-1 deficit to win, 29-17, in th fourth set and, 18-16, in the fifth to snap a three-match losing skid and improve to 13-6 overall and 2-3 in the LEC.  UMass Boston drops to 11-10 overall and 3-1 in the league.  The Wolves will host Rutgers-Newark next on Tuesday at 7 p.m.  WestConn won the first set, 25-22, and lost the next two, 25-14, and, 25-20.

WestConn trailed, 10-5, early and 19-15, later in the fourth set but rallied to tie the score at 19-19 with a 4-0 run that included consecutive kills by senior Sydney Slupatchuk (New Milford, Conn.).  The Beacons served for the match at 25-24 and 26-25, but Stoliker and senior Delia Clouden (Newtown, Conn.) recorded back-to-back kills for WestConn and the Wolves went on to take the set, 29-17.  In the fifth set, the Wolves fell behind again, 5-0, at the start and, 12-6, midway through but clawed their way back with an 8-1 run led by sophomore Ava Grace Gardner (New York, N.Y.) scored three of the eight points on blocks.  UMass Boston led, 15-14, and, 16-15, but WestConn managed to score the match's final three points to clinch it.

WestConn scored eight of the last 13 points to turn a 17-17 tie into a 25-22 win into a 25-22 won, before the Beacons rallied in the second and third sets.  Slupatchuk joined Stoliker in double figures in kills with 11, while senior S Maggie Ferguson (Southbury, Conn.) collected five kills, 43 assists, two aces, four blocks, and 17 digs.  Clouden and Gardner made six blocks apiece and senior L Jersey Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) added a team-high 22 digs.  Paige Coulson paced the Beacons with 21 kills and Audrey Cofield amassed 51 assists.
