WestConn Field Hockey Downed by Keene State

DANBURY, Conn. — The Western Connecticut State University field hockey team dropped a 6-1 Little East Conference (LEC) matchup to the visiting Keene State College Owls on Saturday at the Westside Athletic Complex. The Wolves dropped to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the LEC, while the Owls moved to 10-4 and 3-0.

The visitors netted three goals across the first two quarters before McKinely Soto (Holtsville, N.Y.) put the hosts on the board with less than 30 seconds remaining in the third. Regan Schoen (Newtown, Conn.) picked off an Owl at their own 40-yard line before passing it to her sister Ellenoire Schoen (Newtown, Conn.) across the field near the 20. Ellenoire Schoen chipped the ball over the stick of the defender, followed by a shot saved by a diving Clara Gorman in front of the net. With the Owls' goalkeeper down, a scrum in front of the cage enabled Soto to recover the ball before sneaking it through the defense for the Wolves' lone tally of the contest.

A minute into the final period, Regan Schoen had a close opportunity to make it a one-goal deficit, but Elyse Picard was there to make the defensive save. The senior recovered the ball near the midfield and drove it all the way down to the scoring zone before laying a shot on goal.

The Wolves' back field played a tight game in the first half as Samantha Leonard (Beacon Falls, Conn.) blocked a trio of shots and Kaitlyn Biase (Newtown, Conn.) recorded a defensive save at 26:42.

Keene State outshot the Wolves 23-11 and had a 9-4 penalty corner edge. In the first half, Jaden Kilmer (East Islip, N.Y.) made five stops for the Wolves before Gabriella Johnson (Oakville, Conn.) took over in the net. Gorman also made three saves in the cage for the Owls.

WestConn hits the road on October 14 for a non-conference contest against Nichols College at 7 p.m.
