DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team remained undefeated in Little East Conference play following a 3-0 shutout victory over visiting league foe Southern Maine, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex. Sophomore midfielder
Nickolas Santana (New Haven, Conn.) netted a pair of goals to lead the Wolves to the win.
Santana nearly scored just 11 seconds into the contest when he stole the ball and raced in for a breakaway attempt. However, Huskies sophomore netminder Gabe Wagner (Freeport, ME) came up with a point blank stop to keep the Wolves off the board, momentarily. Santana got his revenge seven minutes later when he took a nifty bicycle feed from junior
Aidan Roxo (Danbury, Conn.) and chipped a shot into the back of the twine for his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Shortly thereafter, the hosts earned a penalty kick attempt. Wagner came up with another spectacular save but the rebound was headed in by rookie midfielder
Matthews Rocha (Danbury, Conn.), upping the WestConn advantage to 2-0 heading into halftime.
After failing to register a shot in the first half, Southern Maine picked up the intensity in the second stanza. Junior forward Cole Johnson (Orange, ME) appeared to score, however, the goal was disallowed due to an offsides call. The Huskies were awarded a penalty kick but WestConn rookie netminder
Makai Smith (Bridgeport, Conn.) thwarted the boot with a sliding kick save of his own. Santana then rounded out the scoring with his second marker of the game, unassisted, in the 67th minute.
The Wolves outshot the Huskies by a 18-2 margin. Wagner finished with seven saves for the visitors, while Smith earned the win and notched a pair of stops. With the win, WestConn improved to 9-4-2 overall and 5-0 in LEC play, while Southern Maine sank to 2-4-6 and 1-1-2. Per Wolves' historian and broadcaster Bart Busterna, WestConn is now unbeaten in the last 14 meetings between the two squads while winning three straight. The Huskies last road victory at the WAC was back in 2011. WestConn gets right back to action tomorrow when they travel to top-ranked Williams College for a non-conference tilt.
