Aylina Razeq (Danbury, Conn.) and sophomore
Kate Robinson (Brookfield, Conn.) each won in singles and doubles to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 4-3 victory over the visiting University of Hartford Hawks in women's tennis action this afternoon at Westside Courts. The Wolves improve to 1-6 and Hartford falls to 0-7. WestConn sophomore
Ava Ciampi (Wolcott, Conn.) won the clinching singles match i three sets. The Wolves will play their third match in as many days tomorrow at Albertus Magnus at 3:30 p.m.
WestConn earned their first doubles point of the season behind a dominant win from Robinson and fellow rookie
Eilynn Pierre (Queens Village, N.Y.) at the bottom of the ladder. Razeq and junior
Erickah Tertulien (Norwalk, Conn.) won a 7-5 nailbiter at first doubles to give Tertulien her first career NCAA win. In singles, Razeq got the Wolves on the board early with a convincing win in the No. 5 spot. Hartford tied the match, 2-2, with wins by Crystal Gallagher and Maddie Pearlman at first and third singles.
Robinson secured her first career singles win at the No. 6 spot, as she battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the second set, to earn a 6-4, 7-5 victory. With two courts left and the Wolves needing one of them, Ciampi won her first set at third singles, 7-5, against Gaby Carr buy dropped the second, 6-1. She earned a 6-3 victory in the third set to clinch the win and the team decision. Pierre and Hartford's Victalia Deida also played a three-setter, but Pierre came up short, 6-4, 5-7, 6-10.
"It is fitting that our first win was a total team victory, said WestConn Head Coach Shawn Stillman. "Everyone's contributions were critical and necessary. A win is great, but having it be hard-earned is even more rewarding. I'm proud of their effort."
