WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - Senior forward
Jourdan Belcher (Elmsford, N.Y.) tallied 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball squad to a 78-67 victory at Little East Conference nemesis Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday night at Geissler Gymnasium.
Junior guard
Tayejon Lynch (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) tacked on 11, while seniors
Jeremiah Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Malik Cole (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 points apiece for the Wolves.
Dominick Dao led the Warriors with a game-high 19 points, while Cedrick Similien contributed 11.
The visitors shot a red-hot 51.7 percent from the floor (30-of-58) while holding the hosts to a respectable 45.5 clip (20-of-44). WestConn forced the tempo and earned 28 turnovers while coughing the ball up just 15 times.
The contest was close in the early moments before Eastern pulled ahead 28-22 midway through the first half on a layup. However, the Wolves stormed back with a run to even the count at 34-34 before putting together another flurry to capture a 44-38 lead at the break.
WestConn would not give up the advantage in the second half. They widened the gap to 19 points late in the second before Belcher netted the team's final basket with 40 seconds remaining.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Warriors sank to 9-3 and 1-3. WestConn will look to keep things moving in a positive direction when they square off against visiting LEC foe Southern Maine on Saturday at 3 p.m.
