WestConn Softball Swept By Manhattanville

DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves dropped both games of a softball doubleheader to the visiting Manhattanville University Valiants on Westside Field this afternoon, 10-0, and, 8-3.  WestConn falls to 13-19 heading into a Little East Conference (LEC) doubleheader against VTSU-Castleton on Saturday at 1 p.m.  The Valiants improve to 23-7.  Senior RHP Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) gave up just two earned runs in six innings and had WestConn's only hit offensively in the first game and went 2-for-4 with a run scored at the plate in game two.

Manhattanville led, 3-0, after five innings of the opener, as WestConn fell victim to eight errors in its infield.  Isabella Tansey had a two-run triple in the fourth for the Valiants.  WestConn senior Rachael Ushka (Southbury, Conn.) walked and stole second base in the fourth to account for the lone WestConn runner to reach second base in the game, while Chenoweth broke up a no-hit bid by Valiant starter Charli Shinstine in the sixth.  Manhattanville put the game away with six runs off two WestConn relievers in the top of the seventh.  Shinstine struck out 12 and walked one to improve to 10-5 with a one-hitter, and Chenoweth fell to 3-7.

WestConn rebounded early in the second game, turning a double play on a diving catch by junior RF Brianna Malvino (Glen Cove, N.Y.) in the top of the first and taking a 1-0 lead on a double off the left field wal by Ushka and an RBI single by freshman 2B Kendall Allen (Naugatuck, Conn.).  Manhattanville got to Wolves rookie starter Brianna McKay (Riverhead, N.Y.) in the third, scoring four times including two of them on a triple by Sarah Harker.  The Wolves made it a one-run game with two in the fifth thanks a two-out two-run single by SS Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, Conn.).

WestConn freshman RHP Lindsay Farinaccio (Red Hool, N.Y.) was sensational in relief for 3.2 innings, before the Valiants scored five times in the seventh including two more on another Harker triple.  Ushka finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a run, a double and an HBP, while Farinaccio struck four Valiants.  Emily Mottoshiski went the distance with two K's for Manhattanville and McKay dropped to 2-1.  Neither team made an error.
