GORHAM, Maine - Sophomore
Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) turned in a valiant effort with 14 saves in goal, as the visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves fell short, 3-0, against the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the Little East Conference (LEC) Women's Soccer Championship Finals this afternoon at Hannaford Field. WestConn finishes its season at 11-6-5 with its third straight loss to Southern Maine in the LEC Finals. The Huskies improve to 15-2-3 while collecting their third consecutive league title. Three different players scored for the Huskies and Mia Sargent received the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award.
Senior Catriona Gould scored for Southern Maine in the third minute, hitting a well-placed ball to the far post past a diving Regan. Regan made six saves in the first half keeping the score at 1-0 through the first 45 minutes. WestConn had two solid chances in the opening stanza with senior forward
Suzana Imetovski (Seymour, Conn.) getting a clear look at the goal in the sixth minute, and classmate Adrian Alfano (New Milford, Conn.) doing the same in the 42nd, but Husky senior goalkeeper Hunter Stonebraker made both stops.
USM pressured early in the second half, putting a pair of shots on frame in the opening five minutes, but again Regan was up to the task. Minutes later, however, the Huskies found their second goal of the game on a header by Kiki Huntress in the 57th minute. The Huskies closed the door on the game in the 61st minute when Gould assisted Hill for an insurance marker. WestConn had an opportunity for one goal late in the game when a header by Imetovski glanced off the cross bar.
