WestConn Football Keeps Rolling With Dominant Win Against Bridgewater State

DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves won their fifth game in a row, pummeling the Bridgewater State University Bears, 49-7, in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) football action this evening at Westside Stadium.  WestConn ends a three-game losing streak against the Bears, scoring seven touchdowns to take a 49-0 lead at halftime en route to the Homecoming Game victory, and improving to 5-1 overall and 5-0 in the MASCAC.  Bridgewater drops to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the league.  The Wolves will be back in action next Saturday, October 26 when they host conference rival Worcester State at 4 p.m.

WestConn jumped all over the Bears, scoring touchdowns on all seven of its possessions in the first half.  Senior QB John Giller (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) threw four touchdown passes, three going to sophomore WR Dae'Shawn Allen (White Plains, N.Y.), and ran for a fifth.  He connected with Allen for scoring strikes of 13 and 23 yards in the first quarter to give the Wolves a 14-0 lead and scored on a two-yard with 3:37 left before the first break. In the second frame, Giller found Allen again on a 35-yard touchdown strike an added a 24-yard touchdown toss to junior WR Zach Soriano (Middle Island, N.Y.).  WestConn RB Kevin Franceschini (Bronx, N.Y.) scored on a four-yard run and Wolves senior QB closed out the first half with a seven yard connection to classmate Julian Ferguson (Enfield, Conn.) into the back left corner of the end zone as time expired.

WestConn also came up big defensively and on special teams.  The Wolves forced a three-and-out on the first Bridgewater State possession and senior Alexis Reyes (Stratford, Conn.) recovered a Bear fumble deep in Bridgewater State territory on a kickoff return to set up WestConn's third touchdown.  Junior DE Jahsir Gayle (Inwood, N.Y.) ended a Bears' drive into WestConn's end with a fourth-down sack early in the second quarter, and senior S DeShaun Hardy-Walker (Newark, N.J.) picked off a Bridgewater State pass at his own end line later in the second and was credited with a 70-yard return that would have been 100 yards if not for an illegal block penalty during the runback.  Giller finished the half and the game with 221 passing yards and 53 rushing yards, completing 16 of his 21 pass attempts.  The only scoring of the second half was a one-yard yard by Bridgewater State's Trevor Nunes.

Franceschini added 52 yards on the ground, while Allen finished with 13 catches for 151 yards and Ferguson caught four balls for 71 yards.  Hardy-Walker added five tackles and a pass breakup to his interception, while freshman LB Tafari Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) had six tackles and junior DB Mike DeFelice (New Windsor, N.Y.) recorded four tackles and three pass breakups.  Bear quarterbacks Jaden Moseley and S.P. Pragano combined for 208 passing yards and Colton Johnson had four catches for 65 receiving yards.  Zachary Souza had eight tackles, a tackle for loss and an interception for Bridgewater State.  With the scoreless first half, WestConn had gone 11 consecutive quarters at home without allowing a point and the Wolves are averaging 49 points per game in their five league wins this fall.
