MIDDLEBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves remained undefeated in Little East Conference (LEC) play with an 8-1 victory over the visiting VTSU Castleton Spartans in women's tennis action this afternoon indoors at the Middlebury Racquet Club. WestConn improves to 5-2 overall with its second 8-1 win in as many days. The Spartans fall to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the league.
The Wolves took all three doubles points, highlighted by the play of juniors
Sophie Charbonneau and
Diana Rebelo (Naugatuck, Conn.) who fought off two match points to force a tiebreaker at 7-7 and closed out the victory with a 7-5 win in the breaker. Fellow juniors
Melanie Grasso (New Fairfield, Conn.) and
Bodhi Kitt (Norwalk, Conn.) continued their unbeaten streak at the top of the doubles ladder for the Wolves with an 8-1 triumph.
In singles, Kitt and Charbonneau clinched the overall match victory with convincing victories at the No. 1 and No. 5 position, respectively. WestConn senior
Natalie Paradise (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Grasso both won for the Wolves in straight-set singles matches, while junior
Sarah Cipriano () won in three sets after losing the first, 6-1. Cipriano took her second set, 6-3, and the tiebreaker, 10-6. Cipriano/Paradise had also won together, 8-3, at third doubles.
"It's great to get another important conference win,: said WestConn Head Coach Shawn Stillman. "When we start off winning all three doubles courts, that takes a lot of pressure off of our singles lineup. Our team continues to improve each match."
