DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University women's tennis squad put forth a well-rounded effort as they avenged last seasons narrow loss and downed visiting Little East Conference rival Salem State University, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon at Westside Courts.
In doubles play, the Wolves' No. 1 pairing of juniors
Bodhi Kitt (Norwalk, Conn.) and
Melanie Grasso (New Fairfield, Conn.)  combined with the No. 3 duo of senior
Natalie Paradise (Naugatuck, Conn.) and junior
Sarah Cipriano (Watertown, Conn.) to dominate, notching wins giving Westconn an early 2-0 lead. In the meantime, the host's pair of junior
Diana Rebelo (Naugatuck, Conn.) and classmate
Sophie Charbonneau (Oakville, Conn.) who fell behind early at 4-7, fought back to force a tiebreaker at 7-7. They once again found themselves in a hole at 0-5 in the breaker, only to retaliate once again winning the next five points. Eventually they fell 8-6 in the breaker, dropping the set 8-7.
In singles action, WestConn completed a sweep winning all six courts, capped by Charbonneau coming back from a 2-5 deficit in the second stanza to close out her contest along with the overall team match in a tiebreaker.
Kitt and Grasso combined to go 4-0 in the last two matches, while Paradise and Cipriano each went 2-0 on the slate.
"I'm very pleased with the win today. Everyone's contributions were key. They were ready to play and were locked in. When we can get ahead early after doubles, that takes some pressure off of the singles matches," said WestConn head coach Shawn Stillman following the revenge victory.Â
With the win, the Wolves improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in LEC play. They will seek to keep things moving in a strong and positive direction when they travel to the University of Saint Joseph for a non-league tilt on Monday at 3:30 p.m. The contest was originally scheduled for September 5 but the scorching weather postponed it.
