DANBURY, Conn. - After trailing 9-8 in the early going of the fourth period, Plymouth State University came from behind to defeated host Western Connecticut State University, 11-10, in overtime, to capture the 2023 Little East Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship at the Westside Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Tournament Most Outstanding Player Elle Moshier (Stratford, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal with 1:08 remaining the first extra three-minute session. It was her fifth goal of the afternoon and 14 of the season for the sophomore midfielder.
The Panthers, now 12-6, earn the automatic berth into the NCAA Division III national tournament, which begins next weekend. Saturday marked the ninth time Plymouth State captured LEC crown. It has now appeared in 16 title matches, dating back to 2002.
Moshier opened the game with three straight goals to give the winners a 3-0 advantage before the Wolves would get on the scoreboard.Â
Olivia Davidson (Brookfield, Conn.) opened the scoring for the hosts with her fifth marker of the season.
WestConn, which ends its season at 15-3, would knot the game at 3-3 following
Colleen Foley's (Kingston, Mass.) free-position tally with 5:57 left in the second stanza. It would be the first of four ties on the afternoon.
The Wolves would take their first lead of the game at 9-8 when
Colleen Crotty (Peabody, Mass.) scored back-to-back goals. The deadlock breaker came off a feed from
Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, Conn.) while WestConn was down a player due to a yellow card, with 9:14 remaining in regulation.
The regular-season champions lead grew to 10-8 following an unassisted DeMarsico goal at the 7:36 mark of the fourth quarter.
Senior attack Emily Santom (Litchfield, N.H.) evened the game at 10-10 with her 36th goal of the season following a feed from Moshier, with 1:22 remaining in regulation.
Olivia Croke (Norwell, Mass.) added a hat-trick for the winners while DeMarsico matched her with three tallied for the Wolves.
Crotty and Davidson each scored a pair of goals for WestConn.
Sophomore net minder Margie Black (Longmeadow, Mass.) earned the victory in goal for the Panthers. She made seven saves.
Senior
Anna Schipf (Babylon, N.Y.) turned away eight shots, but was forced to the sidelines with an injury following a barrage of collisions in the closing minute of play. Molly Bresnahn (Groton, Conn.) came on for the final 12 seconds and made one save as the Panthers were awarded five-straight free-position awards.
