Baseball Season Ends With Loss At RIC

Providence, R.I.--Senior Connor Davey (Cheshire, Conn.) became Rhode Island College's all-time leader in career wins, while the Anchormen claimed at least a share of the program's first-ever Little East regular-season title, in a 15-0 win over Western Connecticut State University at Pontarelli Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Jake Montas (Ellington, Conn.), Joe Gambino (Stamford, Conn.) and Hunter Loomis (Glastonbury, Conn.) each had a single in three trips to the plate.

Rhode Island College improves to 26-11 overall and are 13-1 in the Little East Conference.  The Wolves close out the campaign at 9-29 overall and 3-13 in the league.

Davey earned his 24th career win (24-11) and surpassed the previous mark of 23 established by John Wilkins '83.  He also tied the RIC record for career starts (41). Davey earned his seventh win (7-2) after going six innings and striking out a half-dozen Wolves.

Five WestConn pitchers went for the visitors with Zach Kugler (xxx) suffering the loss.  He is 1-3 on the season after allowing 10 runs, seven of them earned, on seven hits.  Kugler walked three.

The Anchormen clinched at least a share of the league's regular-season championship, secured the No. 1 seed and will host the upcoming Little East Championship on May 10-13. RIC can lock up the outright LEC regular-season title with one win in an LEC doubleheader vs. Plymouth State on May 5.

RIC was able to get ahead of the Wolves early, scoring three runs in the first inning, seven in the second and another three in the third, to lead, 13-0, after three innings.

Standouts during that stretch were senior left fielder Joey Coro, who had three doubles and produced four runs, junior designated hitter Cole Podedworny, who knocked in a pair, and junior catcher David Iannuccilli, who smoked a two-run double in the second.

The Anchormen will close out the regular season with a doubleheader at home against Plymouth State University at noon on Friday, May 5.
