DANBURY, Conn. - Freshman third baseman
Alexis Resto (Shelton, Conn.) went 5-for7 and drove in four runs, but the Western Connecticut State University softball team dropped a pair of games 12-4 and 5-2, to visiting Eastern Connecticut State University in the Wolves' home opener on a chilly Friday afternoon.
In the opener, WestConn, now 12-12 overall and 0-4 in the Little East Conference, led 3-2 after Resto and classmate
Isabella Pincince (West Hartford, Conn.) each had RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Reliever
Sarah Milyko (Goshen, N.Y.) came on for the Wolves for starter
Olivia Bordenaro (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) in the sixth inning but yielded five runs, all of them unearned, on four hits in just two-thirds of an inning. She eventually was saddled with the loss and drops to 0-2 on the season.
The Warriors, now 10-8 overall and 2-0 in the league, scattered 14 hits and took full advantage of four WestConn errors in the opener.
Alyssa Vilchez and Victoria Heaphy each had three hits for the winners in game one. Julia SanGiovanni, Ally Gruca and Heaphy each had a pair of runs batted in the Eastern.
Carley Stoker earned the victory and improves to 5-1 on the year. She went the distance, allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out a dozen while walking three.
In the second game, Resto,
Benni Tucci (Norwalk, Conn.) and
Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) each had two hits as the host scattered eight hits in the loss.
Heaphy and Emma Marelli each had three hits in the back end of the double dip. Heaphy belted her second home run of the year, a solo shot over the right-centerfield fence in the fourth inning to give the Warriors a 3-2 advantage, that they would never squander.
Velchez went seven full, allowed eight hits while striking out five and walking just one. She improves to 5-2 on the season.
Bordenaro returned for the second tilt and went the distance. She falls to 4-2 on the year after allowing five runs on 10 hits, struck out four and walked three.
WestConn will take on University of Massachusetts Boston in a twin bill on Tuesday, April 11. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
ECSUÂ plays host to University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Tuesday, also at 3:30 pm.
