DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore
Madison Zicchinelli (Miller Place, N.Y.) drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Western Connecticut State University softball team a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over visiting University of Massachusetts Boston in the opening game of a doubleheader at Westside Field on Tuesday night. The Beacons rebounded for a 3-1 win in the nightcap behind a fine pitching performance from junior Bri Melchionda.
In the opener, the Wolves, now 13-13 overall and 1-5 in the Little East Conference, scattered a dozen hits with
Rachael Ushka (Southbury, Conn.) ripping a triple and
Isabella Pincince (West Hartford, Conn.),
Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) and
Amber Roggendorf (Great Neck, N.Y.) each belting doubles.
Roggendorf went 3-for-4 with a run batted in while Chenoweth scored the winning run on Zicchinelli's sacrifice fly in the host's final at bat.
Hailey Golembiewski (Columbia, Conn.) went the distance to pick up the victory. She allowed four runs on four hits, struck out eight and walked seven Beacons. The senior right-hander improves to 3-4 on the year in the center circle.
Amauri English and Lauren Miller each had two RBI for UMass Boston in game one. Miller had a triple and drove in the game-tying run in the top of the seventh inning.
Emily Doble suffered the loss and is now 6-5. She allowed five runs, three of them earned, on 12 hits and struck out six.
In the nightcap, Melchionda bumped her record to 9-1 on the season after allowing one unearned run on three singles, struck out six and walked one Wolves' batter in the complete-game gem.
Kaylee Bruce drove in what proved to be the game-winning run in UMB's two-run sixth inning. It added an insurance run on Lauryn Bethea's single down the right-field line in the final stanza. Bethea was the only player with multiple hits in the second tilt. She went 2-for-2 and scored a run after coming on as a substitution in the third inning.
Olivia Bordenaro (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) took the loss in the nightcap and is now 4-3 in her second season. She allowed three runs, two of them earned, struck out five and walked three in seven full innings.
WestConn returns to action tomorrow when it travels to University of St. Joseph for a 3 pm twin bill against the Blue Jays.
The Beacons, now 16-6 overall and 3-3 in the league, travels to Framingham State University on Thursday. First pitch is slated for 3 pm against the Falcons.
