PURCHASE, N.Y. - Sophomore outfielder
Carly Cordova (East Haven, Conn.) smashed five hits and drove in five runs to lead the Western Connecticut State University softball team to a pair of wins at Purchase College on Tuesday afternoon. She scored a pair of runners with two singles as the Wolves took the opener, 11-0. In Game Two, she ripped a two-run double to the right-center gap before adding another RBI single en route to another shutout win, 9-0.
WestConn got things rolling early with four runs in the top of the first of the opener. Rookie
Benni Tucci (Norwalk, Conn.) - who also racked up three hits - drew a walk to lead off the game. She would come around to score on a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Amber Roggendorf (Great Neck, N.Y.).
After a wild pitch scored another runner, Cordova singled thru the right side, sending home rookie
Alexis Resto (Shelton, Conn.), who was hit by a pitch, extending the lead to 3-0. Cordova then touched the plate on an RBI groundout from sophomore
Brianna Malvino (Glen Cove, N.Y.) to make it 4-0.
The Wolves continued to reel off the runs with another five in the second frame. Roggendorf drilled a shot up the middle scoring a pair to begin the barrage. Shortly thereafter, junior
Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) knocked a liner thru the right side, widening the gap to 9-0. The winners plated a run in the fourth and another in the fifth en route to the victory.
WestConn would not hold back in Game Two. They jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the first inning. Resto got it started with an RBI single to center before Malvino roped one to left round out the flurry.Â
The visitors tallied another six runs in the second. Resto drove in another pair of runs with a single to left before sophomore
Madison Vanderploeg (Naneut, N.Y.) finished things off with with a double to left to plate a pair of runners.Â
Six different players earned time on the mound for the Wolves. Sophomore starter
Olivia Bordenaro (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) earned the win in the opener, while junior
Kaitlyn Dean (Carmel, N.Y.) collected the victory in the nightcap.Â
With the pair of win, WestConn improved to 12-10 overall. They return to action when they host a Little East Conference twin bill against cross-state rival Eastern Connecticut on Friday at Noon.
