MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Senior
Joe Gambino (Stamford, Conn.) and junior
Zachary Royka (Naugatuck, Conn.) each went 3-for-4 from the plate while driving in two runs apiece but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University baseball squad fell a non-conference foe Wesleyan University, 14-5, on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, the Wolves fell to 9-26 overall, while the Cardinals improved to 13-15.
The visitors got on the board first when Gambino ripped a single up the middle, scoring graduate student
Jake Montas (Ellington, Conn.) who reached on a walk. However, the hosts countered with a homer in the bottom of the frame en route to seizing a 4-1 lead. They added another trio of runs in the second, widening the gap to 7-1.
The Wolves cut it to 8-5 in the fifth. Gambino roped and RBI single to left before Royka reached on an error, sending Gambino across the plate.
But the Cardinals answered with a six-run seventh inning to seal the win.Â
WestConn returns to action for a doubleheader against visiting Castleton University on Friday at Noon on Senior Day. They contest was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved up to Friday due to impending wet weather.
