Wolves Sweep Doubleheader At Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -  The Western Connecticut State University baseball team swept a late doubleheader at Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday night.  The Wolves, now 7-24, edged the Falcon, 8-7 and 7-6 under the lights at Rochford Field.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 1

  • WestConn capitalized in the top of the first, scoring two runs on three hits, including a RBI double from Riley McGuire and a Falcon error to take the early 2-0 lead.
  • Albertus countered the Wolves in the bottom half of the first by tying the game at 2-all as a one-out single to left field from Shawn Smith scored Kozlowki and Jefferson. Back-to-back outs, however, stranded S. Smith on second and sent the teams to the top of the second.
  • The Wolves did not seem deterred as the visitors recorded another two-run inning behind a passed ball scoring opportunity and a solo home run from Jake Montas.
  • The Falcons kept swinging the bat as Aidan Kane led off the bottom of the second with a walk, followed by a single through the right side from Eric Galarza. From there, the first out was collected on an infield fly to first before Losacano doubled down the left field line, allowing Kane to score, 4-3, but Garlaza was called out at third.
  • Kozlowski kept the momentum going with an infield single to put runners on the corners for Jefferson, who singled to right center advancing Kozlowski to third and sending Losacano home, tying the game at 4-all. A strikeout from S. Smith ended the inning and brought the game to the top of the third.
  • The Falcons' defensive unit went to work, forcing a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third and igniting the offense, who scored another pair of runs behind a one-out single from Garlaza for the two-run advantage, 6-4.
  • The Wolves awoke from their slumber in the top of the fourth as the visitors scored three runs on two hits for the one-run lead, 7-6.
  • After keeping the Falcons at bay in the bottom of the fourth, WestConn struck again, tacking on an additional run in the top of the fifth for the 8-6 lead.
  • The bottom of the sixth saw the Falcons battle back to within one, 8-7, as S. Smith doubled to right field to allow Losacano to cross home, who led off the inning with a single to left field. Following the double to right from S. Smith, Albertus had runners on second and third, but a deep fly ball from John Riccio  was caught for the final out of the inning.
  • The Falcons were unable to ignite a seventh-inning rally and fell short in game one, 8-7.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 2

  • Again, the Wolves struck first, scoring one run off a Falcon scoring error, but Albertus answered back in the home half of the inning, scoring four runs on two hits and a Wolves' error for the 4-1 lead.
  • Losacano led off the inning with a walk, followed by a single to left field from Kozlowski and a RBI single from Jefferson. S. Smith kept things moving by allowing Kozlowski to cross home while Jefferson advanced to third on a throwing error by the third baseman.
  • Jefferson was the final runner to cross home for the Falcons on a groundout from Kane.
  • Albertus extended its lead to five, 6-1, after putting two runs on the scoreboard behind a Wolves' fielding error and a fielder's choice from Riccio.
  • WestConn put together a sixth-inning rally where the visitors scored five runs on two hits and a Falcon error to tie the game at 6-all.
  • The Wolves continued to capitalize on offense scoring one run in the top of the seventh behind a one-out single from Christopher Ehlers for the 7-6 advantage.
  • The Falcons' defensive unit kept the runner on third from scoring following back-to-back outs.
  • Solid pitching and defense from the Wolves kept Albertus off its game in the bottom of the seventh to secure the non-conference road sweep, 7-6.
