DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University softball team came from behind to capture the nightcap, 7-6, and salvage a split with Rhode Island College at chilly Westside Field on Wednesday night. The Anchorwomen prevailed, 7-2 in the opener.
After being deadlocked at 1-1, the two sides scored 11 runs, with the Wolves outscoring the Anchorwomen, 6-5 in favor of in a decisive fifth inning with the host's
Brianna Malvino (Glen Cove, N.Y.) delivering what proved to be the game-winning RBI off reliever Gabby Cunha. Cunha suffered the loss and is now 1-2 on the season after coming on for starter Sam Begantino.
RIC opened the top of the frame by scoring five runs following four WestConn miscues after the rapidly dropping temperatures wrecking havoc on the defenders from each team.
The defense was clean for both clubs over the final two innings and the Wolves, now 18-16 and 3-7 in the Little East Conference, held on for the win for junior righty
Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) She went the distance, allowed only two earned runs on 10 hits, struck out one and walked three. She is now 7-3 from the center circle.
Sophomore Carly Cardova (East Haven, Conn.) led WestConn's offensive attack by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored.
Classmate
Amber Roggendorf (Great Neck, N.Y.) drove in a pair of runs with a double for the winners.
Avery Katz went 3-for-3 and scored a run for the Anchorwomen, which fall to 11-13 overall and 4-4 in the league.
In the opener, Katz had two hits and scored a pair of runs as the visitors scattered nine hits. Pitcher Paige Jones had a double and two RBI for the winners.
Abby Kidd went the distance to improve to 7-5 for RIC. She allowed two runs on nine hits, struck out eight and walked two.
Isabella Princince (West Hartford, Conn.),
Alexis Resto (Shelton, Conn.) and Chenoweth each went 2-for-4 for the Wolves in game one.
Senior
Hailey Golembiewski (Columbia, Conn.) could not get out of the first inning after walking three and allowing a pair of earned runs. She falls to 3-5 on the year.
WestConn will play host to Plymouth State University this Saturday. Prior to the noon start to the double dip, the Wolves will celebrate the career of Golembiewski, their only senior on the roster of 18.
Rhode Island College gets right back at it tomorrow with a home twin bill against non-conference foe Salem State University. First pitch is slated for 4 pm in Providence.
