DANBURY, Conn. - Freshman
Benni Tucci (Norwalk, Conn.) went 5-for-8, drove in a run and scored another in Western Connecticut State University's doubleheader split with visiting Plymouth State University at Westside Field on Senior Day on Saturday.
Following the rapidly-played twin bill, WestConn celebrated the career of its lone senior,
Hailey Golembiewski (Columbia, Conn.).
The Wolves, now 19-17 overall and 4-8 in the Little East Conference, captured the opener, 4-1 before falling to the Panthers, 4-2 in the second game today.
In the opener, Tucci was one of four WestConn players to register a run batted in after Plymouth State, now 13-15 overall and 4-6 in the league, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Freshman
Isabella Pincince (West Hartford, Conn.) reached on a bunt single and drove in junior
Rachael Ushka (Southbury, Conn.) to knot the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The hosts would then take a 2-1 lead when when the next Wolves player to the plate,
Alexis Resto (Shelton, Conn.), pushed Tucci across on a ground out.
WestConn added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning when
Amber Roggendorf (Great Neck, N.Y.) and Tucci recorded RBI in the next frame.
Junior righty
Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) earned the complete-game victory and is now 8-3 from the center circle for WestConn. She allowed the one run on seven singles and stuck out four for the winners.
Kate McGrath suffered the loss for the Panthers and is now 5-4. She allowed four runs, two of them earned on seven hits, struck out three and walked one.
In the second tilt, Mia Ly led the Panthers' offense by going 2-for-2 with a three-run triple. After walking from the plate, thinking she had gone down on strikes, she wrapped the next pitch to the fence in right field to clear the bases in PSU's four-run third inning. Ly later came in to score on Emily Picard's infield single.
Tucci, Pincince, Chenoweth and Roggendorf each had two hits in the loss. The latter two collected doubles and an RBI apiece.
Freshman Emily Antrim evens her record at 5-5 after going the distance. She allowed 11 hits, struck out three and walked two.
Starter
Olivia Bordenaro (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) is also now 5-5 after allowing all four runs, on seven hits, over the first three innings. She struck out one.
Golembiewski finished the final four innings to keep Plymouth State at bay. She allowed two hits, struck out five, including the first three batters after coming on in the fourth inning, and walked four.
WestConn will wrap up the regular-season with two road tilts and a chance to make it into the top six of the LEC standings. The challenge begins next Saturday when it travels to University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for a 1 pm double dip with the Corsairs.
On May 6, the Wolves visit Castleton University for a noon DH with the Spartans.
