DANBURY, Conn. - Senior attackman
Trey Aronow (Holbrook, N.Y.) tallied a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team to an 18-13 victory over visiting Little East Conference opponent UMass Boston on Wednesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Classmate midfielder
Stephen Cicchetti (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and rookie middie
Tristan McMahon (Farmingville, N.Y.) each chipped in with four goals and one assist.
Junior midfielder Jacob Banks (Westminster, Mass.) paced the Beacons with four goals and one helper, while graduate student Gavin Admirand (Marshfield, Mass.) and junior Charlie Chapman (Sandwich, Mass.) each added hat tricks.
The visitors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in a wild and fast paced game that featured just under 100 shots. Chapman tickled the twine twice less than two minutes into the game. WestConn countered with a blistering barrage of three goals in less than one minute. Cicchetti and senior faceoff specialist
Jonathan Russack-Baker (Groton, Conn.) each found the back of the twine before Aronow capped off the spurt with his 31st marker of the season on the man-up. The score would be knotted at 5-5 to end the first quarter.
Things didn't slow down in the second. Scoring highlights for the Wolves included sophomore attackman
Julian Duque's (Mastic, N.Y.) 40th goal of the campaign, while junior goalkeeper
Brendan Grove (Cheshire, Conn.) cleared the ball and ended up going coast-to-coast, firing the rock into the twine. He nearly found the net earlier in the stanza. The Wolves extended the advantage to 12-9 at halftime.
It was a slower and more controlled pace in the third and fourth quarters. The winners seized their largest lead of the contest when McMahon buried his 22nd scoring strike of the year with 4:47 left in the third. The Beacons cut it to 17-13 late in the fourth before sophomore midfielder
Matt Sweeney (Rocky Point, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for the hosts at 18-13.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in league play, while UMass Boston fell to 9-6 and 4-2. WestConn returns to action at non-conference opponent Massachusetts Maritime on Saturday at Noon.
