KEENE, N.H. - Freshmen
Benni Tucci (Norwalk, Conn.),
Alexis Resto (Shelton, Conn.) and
Isabella Pincince (West Hartford, Conn.) combined by going 6-for-9 and driving in four runs as the Western Connecticut State University softball team split a pair of Little East Conference games at Keene State College on Saturday afternoon.
After falling 7-3 in the opener, the Wolves rebounded to take the nightcap, 6-2, and upped their record to 17-15 overall and 2-6 in the league.
WestConn got the scoring started in the top of the third inning when
Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) drove in a pair of unearned runs.
An inning later Pincince wrapped a two-RBI single to score Tucci and
Brianna Malvino (Glen Cove, N.Y.). Resto followed up with an RBI single to push Pincince across the dish and gave the visitors a 5-0 advantage.
The Wolves added an insurance run in the seventh when Resto doubled home Tucci.
Chenoweth had another solid performance in the center circle for the winners. She improved to 6-4 on the season after going the distance, allowing two unearned runs on five Owls' hits. Chenoweth fanned five during the victory.
In the opener, Chenoweth was the only WestConn to record multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in. Her second RBI knotted the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning, but she and her teammates squandered four costly runs in the bottom half of the same frame.
Senior
Hailey Golembiewski (Columbia, Conn.), now 3-5, suffered the loss after allowing three runs in one and a third innings overall. She would yield one hit and walk two and plunk another before Head Coach
Heather Stone went back to starter Olivia Bordenero (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.).
Bordenaro allowed four runs, only one of them earned, on five hits, struck out three and walked four others, in four and two-third innings.
WestConn committed seven errors in the twin bill, including five miscues in its second-game victory.
Keene State falls to 7-17 overall on the season and sit one place above WestConn, in eighth place in the LEC with a 3-5 mark.
The Wolves return to action on Tuesday, April 18 when they play host to Rhode Island College. The double dip against the Anchorwomen is set to begin at 4 pm.
