DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore
Olivia Bordenaro (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and junior
Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) each put forth stellar starting pitching performances to propel the Western Connecticut State University softball squad to a doubleheader sweep over visiting non-league foe Mount St. Mary College on Thursday. The hosts outlasted the visitors, 2-1, in the opener before capturing the nightcap, 4-1.
The Knights put up the first run of the afternoon in the top of the first inning when senior Samantha Bendig (Tampa, Fla.) ripped a double to the left-center gap scoring a runner. However, Bordenaro settled in en route to tossing a complete game, while striking out three batters and surrendering just four hits.
WestConn countered to tally all the runs they would need in the third inning. After a lead-off single from rookie
Benni Tucci (Norwalk, Conn.), classmate outfielder
Isabella Pincince (West Hartford, Conn.) reached on a bunt single. Chenoweth then singled thru the left side of the infield to load the bases. Sophomore
Carly Cordova (East Haven, Conn.) then smashed an RBI sacrifice fly to right. The Wolves came around to score another run on an error to seize the 2-1 advantage. Bordenaro took care of things the rest of the way, along with some slick fielding from junior shortstop
Rachael Ushka (Southbury, Conn.), sealing the opening win.
The Wolves wasted no time jumping ahead in the nightcap. Rookie
Alexis Resto (Shelton, Conn.) drilled a double to left and would later come around to score on a Knight's fielding error. The hosts added another pair of runs in the second frame, widening the gap to 3-0. Tucci laid down an RBI bunt single before another runner crossed the plate on a Knight miscue.Â
Sophomore
Amber Roggendorf (Great Neck, N.Y.) led off the fourth with a single. Shortly thereafter, she touched the plate to make it 4-0 when classmate
Madison Vanderploeg (Nanuet, N.Y.) smacked a single up the middle, The visitors broke up the shutout in the sixth when junior Sofia Gannon (East Patchogue, N.Y.) lined a run scoring double to right center, rounding the count out at 4-1.Â
With the sweep, the Wolves improved to 15-13 overall, while the Knights dropped to 9-11. WestConn returns to action when they travel to Little East Conference opponent Keene State College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
