WestConn Softball opens season with 9-1 win over Clark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NAPLES, Fla. - Junior short stop Rachael Ushka went 3-for-3, scored two runs and drove in another and freshman third baseman Alexis Resto drove in a pair of runs after going 2-for-3 as the Western Connecticut State University softball team opened the 2023 campaign with a five-inning 9-1 victory over Clark University at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the North Collier Sports Complex.  The Wolves dropped a 4-0 decision to Rockford University in the day's second contest.

Game 1:
WestConn vs. Clark University

Junior Sydney Chenoweth earned the victory in the center circle after allowed four hits and one unearned run.  She struck out three Cougars over five innings.

The Wolves tied the game a 1-1 with an unearned run in the third inning before exploding for eight runs, seven of those unearned in the decisive fourth innings.

Benni Tucci, Brianna Malvino and Jada Miconi each had two hits as WestConn pounded out 13 hits against Clark.

Felicia Salvati and Ella Traynor were the only Cougars to register a hit on Thursday morning.

Nicole Buckley suffered the loss after allowing a dozen hits and nine runs, eight of them unearned.  She struck out one and walked two Wolves.

Keira Langus worked the final inning for Clark.  She gave up one hit and struck out one.

GAME 2:
Rockford University vs. WestConn

Benni Tucci went 2-for-3 and Isabella Pincince collected one hit in two official at bats, but the WestConn softball team was blanked by Rockford University, 4-0.

Hailey Golembiewski suffered the loss after yielding just one run on one hit after coming on in relief of starter Olivia Bordenero.  Golembiewski struck out two and walked five.

Chenoweth allowed three runs, two of them earned after being called from the bullpen at the start of the seventh inning.

The Regents, now 3-4, made the best out of three hits and a trio of WestConn fielding miscues.  They plated three runs in the top of the final inning.

Mariah Martin, now 3-2 on the season, struck out nine Wolves while yielding just three singles and walked one.

Kariana Williams and Isabella Intravaia each had an RBI for the winners.

WestConn takes on Drew University at 9 am and John Carroll University at 11 am on Friday, March 10.
