DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Sophomore second baseman
Julian Gonzalez (Wethersfield, Conn.) drove in a pair of runs in the opener, however, the Western Connecticut State University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at UMass Dartmouth on Friday. The Wolves fell in Game One, 12-5, before dropping a 10-0 decision in Game Two in a twin bill that marked the start of the Little East Conference slate for both squads.
With the pair of losses, WestConn moved to 3-16 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Corsairs improved to 11-5 and 2-0.
The visitors got off to a sluggish start as the hosts opened the scoring to capture a 9-0 lead thru three innings.Â
After drawing a two-out walk in the top of the fourth, senior first baseman
Joe Gambino (Stamford, Conn.) eventually came around to score on a wild pitch to get the Wolves on the board.Â
WestConn cut the deficit to 9-2 in the fifth frame. Gonzalez drilled a grounder to second that scored senior
Cameron Bogli (Vernon, Conn.) who reached when he ripped a triple to the left-center field gap.Â
The Corsairs countered with a run in the bottom half to make it 10-2 before WestConn responded with a trio of runs in the sixth, shrinking the gap to 10-5. Gonzalez earned his second RBI of the contest when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring graduate student
Jake Montas (Ellington, Conn.) who led off the inning with a single to right. They would tack on another pair of runs with a fielder's choice RBI and a UMass Dartmouth error. However, they would not get any closer as the hosts added another pair of runs in the eighth, sealing the Game One win.
It was all UMass Dartmouth in the nightcap as WestConn faced a red-hot starting pitcher. Sophomore Adam Maher threw a seven inning no-hit shutout while walking four and striking out 10 to lead the Corsairs to the Game Two victory.Â
The Wolves were scheduled to return to action Sunday for their home opener against SUNY Poly. However, the twin bill has been postponed with heavy rain in the forecast for this weekend. WestConn is scheduled to play visiting UMass Boston in an LEC doubleheader on Saturday, April 1 at Noon.
