Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Western Connecticut State University softball team came from three runs back to defeat St. Joseph's University of Brooklyn, 4-3 in eight innings then cruised to a 14-2 victory, in five innings, over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at the Lee Country Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
WestConn ended its mini-two-game losing streak and are now 8-4 at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Florida's gulf coast.
Game One - St. Joseph's University Brooklyn 3, WestConn 4 highlights:
With the game knotted at 3-3 in the opener, junior right fielder
Sydney Chenoweth belted RBI single to left field and drove in freshman left fielder
Isabella Pincince who started the bottom half of eighth inning when the international tiebreaker rule was implemented.
After falling behind 3-0 after five innings, the Wolves scored three runs in the sixth frame. Sophomore first baseman
Amber Roggendorf delivered an RBI single to right field, which scored Pincince with the first of two runs to cross the plate.
The next batter,
Carly Cordova singled to left field to push
Jazzy Edmunds, who came on as a pinch runner for
Alexis Resto, and Chenoweth with the game-tying runs.
Olivia Bordenaro earned the complete-game victory and is now 3-0 on the season. She allowed three runs, two of them earned, on seven singles, struck out eight and walked a trio Bears.
Freshman second baseman Leila Heller led SJUBÂ with a hit and two runs batted in.
Classmate Brooke Horn was saddled with the loss and is 0-1. She too went the distance, allowed five hits, struck out six and walked three Wolves.
Game Two - WestConn 14, MCLA 2 highlights:
WestConn pounded out 12 hits and took full advantage of eight Trailblazers' errors in its second game of the day.
Freshman
Benni Tucci continued her blistering hitting by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and scoring three runs.
Carly Cordova went 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs batted in for the winners. Â
First-year Alexis also had three RBI after going 1-for-4.
Other Wolves with multiple hits were
Isabella Pincince and
Jada Miconi, each collecting two hits in three official trips to the dish.
Junior
Kaitlyn Dean was credited with the victory after going four inning, allowing a pair of runs on six hits and striking out six.
Sophomore
Karly Vito mopped up in the fifth and final inning. She allowed just one hit.
The Trailblazers, which drop to 1-7 on the season, were led by Kristie Zator. She went 2-for-3 and drove in a run.
Sophomore Gabriella Cozzolino suffered the loss after allowing 14 runs, but just one of them earned. She allowed 11 hits, struck out one, walked five and is now 0-3 for MCLA.
