FORT MYERS, Fla. - Despite a pair of strong starting pitching performances from seniors
Connor Gannon (New Milford, Conn.) and
Orlando Swift (Sandy Hook, Conn.), the Western Connecticut State University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Skidmore College on Wednesday. The Wolves fell in the opener, 5-0, before dropping the afternoon matchup, 6-4.
WestConn scattered four hits in the seven-inning Game One affair. Seniors
Riley McGuire (Monroe, Conn.),
Joe Gambino (Stamford, Conn.) along with junior
Zachary Royka (Naugatuck, Conn.) and sophomoreÂ
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) each notched singles.
Swift tossed nearly six innings of solid work, allowing just one earned run while striking out six Skidmore batters. Grayden Harris was equally impressive for Skidmore, finishing with seven shutout innings and eight strikeouts to earn the win.
WestConn held a 2-1 advantage early in Game Two when Gambino came around to score on a wild pitch after reaching on a walk. Jackson Hornung had a stellar performance at the plate, going 4-for-4 with five RBI's. He dealt the game-changing blow to WestConn when he ripped a three-run homer over the left field fence in the fourth, giving Skidmore a 5-2 lead. He drove in another with a single in the sixth, widening it to 6-2.
The Wolves rallied with a pair of runs in the seventh, shrinking it 6-4. Graduate student
Jake Montas (Ellington, Conn.) and senior
Cameron Bogli (Vernon, Conn.) each earned RBI's. Gannon threw a complete game, allowing just two earned runs, while fanning three.
With the pair of losses, WestConn moved to 2-10 overall, while Skidmore improved to 6-2. The Wolves return to action tomorrow with a twin bill against Saint Elizabeth University. First pitch is slated for 9 a.m.
