FORT MYERS, Fla. - Sophomores
Anthony Piazza (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) each drilled home runs but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University baseball squad dropped both games of a doubleheader to Wabash College during its Spring Trip in Florida on Saturday.
WestConn dropped the early morning contest, 17-6, before falling in the afternoon matchup, 10-3.
With the pair of losses, the Wolves dropped to 2-4 overall while the Little Giants improved to 10-4. WestConn will look to rebound tomorrow when they square off against Augustana College (IL) at 9 a.m.
In Game One, WestConn jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Moeller smashed a solo shot over the wall. Wabash quickly evened the count at 1-1 in the top of the second when sophomore Evan Neukam (Carmel, IN) notched an RBI single.
The Little Giants would later erupt with four runs in the fourth and sixth in the fifth to take control of the contest. They held a 17-2 advantage in the seventh before Piazza stepped to the plate and bashed a three-run homer over the fence. Senior first baseman
Joe Gambino (Stamford, Conn.) drove in Moeller to wrap the scoring out at 17-6.
Wabash continued to pour it on in Game Two as they scored seven runs thru the opening three innings. WestConn chipped away at the lead. Moeller scored on an error from the Little Giants catcher in the fourth before sophomore
Spencer Barnett (Danbury, Conn.) knocked a single to push Gambino across the plate. Gambino would add another RBI groundout in the fifth, cutting the advantage to 7-3. Wabash countered with a trio of runs in the bottom half of the frame to wrap up the action.
