WEST HARRISON, N.Y. - Senior
Joe Gambino (Stamford, Conn.) had four hits in six at bats and drove in four runs while
Jake Montas (Ellington, Conn.) drove in four runs as the Western Connecticut State University baseball team opened the 2023 campaign with a doubleheader sweep against Yeshiva University, 19-1 and 11-1, at Silver Lake Park on Sunday afternoon.
In the opener, the Wolves pounded out 14 hits including a triple each from
Riley McGuire (Monroe, Conn.) and Montras, two doubles from Gambino and
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) and another two-bagger from
Nick Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.).
Moeller finished with a game-high four runs batted in while McGuire and Montas plated three runners each.
Connor Gannon (New Milford, Conn.) was credited with the victory in game one after allowing two hits, striking out six and walking just one over three innings.
Sam Capetanakis (Easton, Conn.) went two innings, struck out one and walked a trio of Maccabees.
Tyler Olmo (Ardsley, N.Y.) and
Anthony Ormond (Trumbull, Conn.) each struck out one while hurling the last two innings, respectively.
In the afternoon finale,
Cameron Bogli (Vernon, Conn.) drove in three runs after registering a hit in two official trips to the dish.
Gambino pushed a pair across, went 1-for-2 and scored a run.
Sophomore
Orlando Swift (Sandy Hook, Conn.) tossed three scoreless innings and yielded just one hit. He struck out five and was credited with the victory.
Three Zacharys closed out the final four innings.
Zach Kugler (Newtown, Conn.) went two frames and allowed the lone run on three hits while
Zachary Barry (Fairfield, Conn.) and
Zachary Royka (Naugatuck, Conn.) combined for five strike outs in the final six punch outs of the game.
The Wolves have 18 days off until they return to action in Fort Myers, Florida. They open the southern swing with a twinbill against Haverford College. First pitch is scheduled for high noon in the Sunshine State.
