DANBURY, Conn. - Despite a game-high 22 points from senior guard
Kendall Robinson (Bellport, N.Y.), the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to visiting archrival Eastern Connecticut, 81-75, in a Little East Conference matchup on Wednesday night at Feldman Arena.
Robinson also racked up a team-high 10 rebounds, while classmate forward
Ryan Alkins (Queens, N.Y.) and sophomore guard
Keeshawn Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) joined him in double figures scoring with 11 and 14 points, respectively.Â
Senior guard Tyreice Woods (Hartford, Conn.) led the Warriors with 21 points while rookie guard Dominick Dao (Terryville, Conn.) poured in 20 which included four shots from three-point territory. Senior forward Quinton Lott (Bridgeport, Conn.) added a double-double with 11 points to go along with a game-high 19 boards.Â
It was a hard-fought physical and foul filled battle. The Wolves connected on 21-of-35 (60 percent) of their free throw attempts while the Warriors managed an 18-for-26 (69 percent) clip. The visitors also sank 11-of-31 (36 percent) of their shots from beyond-the-arc, while the hosts went just 4-of-19 (21 percent).Â
WestConn opened the contest with a 5-0 spurt. However, Eastern countered and quickly built a 19-14 cushion. The Warriors would hold a 36-31 lead at the break.
The Wolves trailed by as much as nine points early in the second half before trimming the deficit to just two. Graduate student forward
Jordon Brown (Danbury, Conn.) took a feed from Jones and converted a layup, slicing it to 49-47 with 9:49 remaining.
However, the hosts were unable to regain the advantage, falling behind by 13 points late in the contest.Â
With the loss, the Wolves dropped to 21-3 overall and 12-3 in league play, while the Warriors improved to 13-12 and 10-6.Â
WestConn has already secured the No. 2 seed and first round bye for the LEC Postseason Tournament slated to begin on Tuesday. They will host a team to be determined in Thursday's semifinal round. They return to action for their regular season finale on Saturday at Southern Maine at 1 p.m.
