KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Despite dominating play and outshooting the hosts by a 20-5 margin, the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking setback as they were edged at United States Merchant Marine Academy, 1-0, in a non-league matchup on Sunday afternoon at Tomb Field.
With the the loss, the Wolves fell to 10-2-2, while the Mariners improved to 3-4-6. WestConn had been seeking to stretch its unbeaten streak to 12 games.Â
The visitors dominated play as the ball was in the hosts end of the field much of the day. However, the Wolves couldn't get their shots on target as 15 of them missed the net. WestConn also had five corner kick chances while the Mariners were shutout in that category.Â
After a scoreless first half, the lone goal of the game was tallied when Jason Healey took a pass from Patrick Novotny and ripped a one-timer type shot into the twine 64:17 into the contest.Â
Wolves sophomore netminder
Zachary Benson (Milford, Conn.) took the tough luck loss and finished with one save, while a pair of Merchant Marine goalies split time between the pipes and combined for five saves.
WestConn will look to get back to its winning ways when they host Little East Conference archrival Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
